What are the main industrial uses of lithium?

Lithium Carbonate:

Lithium carbonate is classified into different grades, including battery grade, industrial grade, and high purity grade.

Battery grade is mainly used in the production of various secondary battery cathodes, including lithium manganese oxide, lithium cobalt oxide, lithium iron phosphate, and medium-to-low nickel ternary materials. It is primarily used in energy storage, power, and consumer applications.

Industrial grade is mainly used in traditional industrial production, including glass ceramics, battery electrolytes, and the preparation of other lithium salts, such as lithium hydroxide or purification of battery-grade lithium carbonate.

High purity grade is primarily used in the production of piezoelectric materials, including lithium tantalate and lithium niobate single crystals.

Lithium Hydroxide:

Lithium hydroxide has similar applications to lithium carbonate and is also classified into battery grade and industrial grade.

Battery grade is primarily used in the production of cathode materials for high-nickel ternary batteries, used in end-use applications such as new energy vehicles.

Industrial grade is mainly used in the production of lithium-based greases and for air conditioning as an air desiccant using lithium bromide.

Metallic Lithium:

Metallic lithium has relatively diverse applications. In batteries, it is mainly used as a negative electrode material for primary batteries and may also be used as a negative electrode material in solid-state batteries in the future. Other applications include military hybrid fuels and the production of other lithium-based alloys.

Industrial-grade metallic lithium is mainly used in the production of materials such as butyl lithium, amino lithium, and lithium aluminum hydride.

Other Application Areas:

Lithium salts have even broader applications, such as the production of synthetic rubber, specialty engineering materials, and pharmaceutical uses, among others.
